In the first unit we will have a heavy focus on place value. Students will work with 2 and 3 digit numbers by breaking numbers apart and estimating. Students will learn how addition and subtraction impacts place value. They will also build on addition and subtraction strategies they used in 2nd grade and will begin to identify strategies they use efficiently and successfully to add and subtract.
***A big emphasis in 3rd grade is multiplication facts. We begin this unit around January. Please begin working on these with your students. Use flash cards to quiz your child about 5 minutes a night. We work on multiplication facts through 10.
In the next unit (until Oct 12), students will be working on geometry. By the end of the unit, students will be able to describe attributes of triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons. In this unit they will measure perimeter of irregular polygons and use attributes of shapes to find a missing side length. Lastly, they will find the side length when the perimeter is given.
In the next unit (until Nov 29), students will learn rounding to the nearest 10 and 100. Students will use those strategies to estimate addition problems using 3 digit numbers. They will identify strategies to add and subtract 3 digit numbers. Students will continue to work on telling time,
